PRIVATE COMMISSION
Fable
Equine Quarter Life-Size Portrait
After receiving this commission, I flew into Miami and travelled up to Wellington, Florida over a few days, to watch Fable compete in the showjumping hunter classes. Hunters are judged on how a horse goes rather than how fast it gets round - the shape of the jump, the rhythm, the way a horse carries itself between fences. For a sculptor that's a gift: I watched an animal assessed on exactly the things I was trying to capture.
I photographed him competing, then measured him properly outside his stable, using both as references to create the finished clay work.
The patina took a great deal of consideration - Fable's colour is so much a part of him that a standard dark brown would have lost something.
