Each autumn the red deer rut turns the hills into something you hear long before you see. A mature stag bellows to hold his group of hinds together and to warn off the rival stags circling for a chance at them, and the roar does much of the work that fighting would otherwise do - it advertises his size and his stamina, so that a rival who can hear he is outmatched will often move off rather than risk locking antlers. This piece is the stag caught at the height of that, head thrown back, muzzle lifted and throat open, with the whole animal thrown into the sound.
