The honey badger has a reputation out of all proportion to its size. It is a low, heavily built animal, no taller than your knee, with short powerful legs, long digging claws and a loose, thick hide, and it is entirely willing to raid a beehive through the stings, to hold its ground against animals many times its weight, and to hunt and kill snakes - venomous ones included - that most predators would leave well alone. This piece shows it mid-scene, a mole snake gripped in its jaws, a fresh kill that the badger is hauling off at a low, hurried, determined drag. The long body of the snake trails back and down from the mouth, the badger's weight is thrown forward into the pull, and the whole animal reads as something that has taken its meal by force and has no intention whatever of giving it up.
