This is Mountain Gorilla. They're found only in a couple of small pockets of high-altitude forest - the Virunga Mountains, spanning the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Uganda, and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. They're one of the great conservation success stories, having come back from the brink of extinction, and anyone who's spent time with them talks about the same thing: how calm, intelligent and almost human their presence feels. I wanted to capture that here - he's sitting with this knowing, thoughtful gaze, scratching one arm while the other hand plays absent-mindedly with his foot. It's a small, unguarded moment rather than anything dramatic, which felt truer to their actual character than a more aggressive pose would have been.
