African wild dogs hunt as a pack and they are among the most intelligent and cooperative hunters on the continent, and this piece catches them in the moment before the chase rather than during it — four of them drawn up around a termite mound, heads low and ears forward, working out what to do about the warthog that has backed into a hole at its base.

The composition runs along its length at over eighty centimetres, the four dogs spread around the mound so the piece reads differently from every side, and the challenge was to give each dog its own attention and posture while keeping them working together as a group focused on a single point.

It is cast in bronze by the lost-wax process and finished by hand with a patina worked into the surface, gathered into the coats of the dogs and the rough of the mound so the whole scene holds the light as you move around it. A limited edition of nine, each cast signed by the artist and supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
